Category: Gig Guide – Our take on gigs past

Obviously the musical type of fun… We’re not THAT type of band!

We’ve been lucky in the past to play at weddings and birthday parties, and there’s lots of space in our diary; so your party could be our next gig.
We’re all ready to go with cheesy disco party numbers, funky soul classics and a smattering of eighties rock. We’re also up for learning any songs that you might want playing, as long as they’re crowd pleasers!
We can bring our own PA system and we try to be as fair as possible when it comes to working out travel costs. Plus, we can even bring along a very qualified DJ with us for a small extra fee! That way you can keep the party pumping well into the night.

If you fancy a bit of rumourstyle action to give your party a boost, then check out our ‘About’ page for contact details.

Have you heard The Rumour yet?

It was all going so well...

So, lets set the scene. We’re still at the YMCA in Nottingham. We’ve finished our music workshop, moved all the gear over to the performance space, set up and sound checked. Our deputy bass-player had arrived, and we’re all ready for a wicked set.

YMCA’s Got Talent was underway – some classy acts had performed and others were waiting in the wings. At a crucial moment, there was a flat crack, and the sound ceased to be. Tom called us on the batphone, and we all sprang into action… There was power to the speakers, but no hiss, no sound. After a frantic 45 minutes that seemed to go on forever – we’d de-rigged the gear and had it open in the theatre next door. It was no good – there was a short circuit and the fuses kept on blowing. Reluctantly, we shifted our monitor speakers round to be our front of house, and we were ready to rock again.

The gig went well, considering – Tom and I couldn’t hear anything other than the occasional blast of instruments, but it was a great night – thanks to everyone who danced the night away – Rumourstyle. We’re all bitterly disappointed that our gear failed, but we’re blessed with some decent enough backups not to have spoiled a great night.

A special thanks go to Jim  and Ken from the YMCA – their level head and responsible attitude helped us avoid disaster.

We’ll be back up to full strength soon enough – a quick trip to the workshop should sort out the poorly gear.

Hope to see you again soon, YMCA.

The Rumour

We’re sitting waiting to be fed here in Nottingham! We’ve just played our worship songs for tonight, and we’re now up for a well-earned rest after an EPIC day of packing, fetching, carrying, insulting and playing.
We’ve plugged our gig for tomorrow, so if you’re also in Nottingham and reading this – come on down for a spectacular spectacular. Or a gig with The Rumour. You choose.

We’ll be keeping you up to date with anything that happens – well not anything, that’d be daft.

Andy’s getting the beers in, so until next time!

Tom for The Rumour

We’re due to be playing at the YMCA’s National Assembly next weekend, and there’s only 4 days of prep left.

We’ve hired a big van, sorted out a bass player (thanks Rob), and come up with a few new songs to keep things interesting!
We’ve got a rehearsal on Wednesday – so we’re all pumped for that, plus we’re doing our final patented ‘idiot check’ before we set off – we don’t want to forget anything!

We’ve not played for a while, so we’re spent time to make sure that we’re every bit as tight as we can be.  I hope that tonnes of people come and join in the fun on Saturday night.

Until next time!

Well, it’s been a long time, but we finally got back on the road again last night. The good people of ‘To the Max’ hosted an activity day at Grove School and we were invited to lead worship to close the event.
We brought with us a couple of very talented guys who we’ve been watching grow at our local church, and threw them in at the deep end. Josh and Scott are great performers and were a real treat to be around.

Thanks to everyone at tothemax! We hope to see you all again soon!

Thanks to all that came and showed your support in Ibstock. It was great to see you all, and we’re looking forward to seeing you again in Lichfield, where we hope to have something special for you.

For those of you who didn’t come along, it was an evening of dancing, singing and shape-busting: all of which were forced upon our audience by Mr James Tolley. Congratulations to the winners of the shapebusting contest, we hope you enjoyed your Rumour goodybag and signed stuff!

We will return to ibstock in the future, so keep an ear to the ground to find out when we’ll be back. Also keep checking our facebook and myspace pages, along with therumour.org to find out details of our part of the dioceasan renewal in October.

Well that’s all from us. We’ve completed our residency at Café Uno, and will be sad to leave the shed of funk and go back to work on Thursday. It was great to see so many faces coming night after night, and even better when they were dancing like eejits. We’d like to thank so many people for making our time here as good as it was.

Thanks go out to

The Café Uno team – your coffee, tea and cake was great, and the dancing was even better!

Sam, our sound engineer – for keeping us sounding as funky as possible and not letting us get too carried away with the volume levels. We look forward to working with you in the future (if we’re invited back for another year!)

The production team for keeping us laughing with tales of whipped nuggets, the use of their stores and for getting the stage built so quickly on the first day.

We’ve already mentioned it, but the catering for the teams is really second to none – thanks guys for your hours of prep work, cheese grating and what must be the world’s biggest pile of washing up.

So, that’s all from us. We’ll be back in the future, with more blogtastic blogs for you.

Last night was our best gig here at Soul Survivor Stafford. Not that we’re here to be arrogant, the crowd told us, they did the Love Train inside and outside of Café Uno. It was like a giant train-like conga!

The gig was almost postponed as we fell victim to prank after prank by the production crew. They decided that they’d had enough of our clothes-rail taking up valuable space in their stores, and decided to put their forklift to good use by hoisting it 20foot in the air while we were sound checking! Thanks guys, hope you enjoyed your cookies!

During our break we ran over to the main meeting venue and caught 10 minutes of onehundredhours. They were certainly up to their normal high standards. We caught up with Mark Prentice afterwards – who remembered us from when we supported them a few years back. It was good to see you again too, guys.

Some very weird things happened tonight. We played well, but not with much luck on the dancing front. We were defeated by the weather – it was really hot and sticky and people were tired after night after night of dancing, shouting and singing! The people who came to the Big Uno were played a different mix of funk and rock – something to sit and drink coffee to.

After the gig – we signed photos, albums and a shoe in the Toolshed. Goodness knows why the lad wanted his shoe signed, but thanks for giving us a laugh! You will always be our first shoe-signing, Josh…

We survived another night in a tent! Wooo!

We mixed things up a bit last night in Cafe Uno. We love our rock as much as the next man, but we decided to add a healthy dollop of funk into our set last night. Never Too Much was a real highlight for us: it really gets the people dancing!! We added a few of our rock classics to the mix though, with Mr Brightside making an appearance toward the end of the night.

Tonight, we’re mixing things up again. We’re adding instrumentals to the flavour of the bug Uno, with some unepected dancefloor fillers.

On a side note, we’d like to say a big thanks to the guys in the catering team here. Thanks for keeping us fed and watered in the heat!

Until next time

Spencer and The Rumour
